Iceland-based independent game developer 1939 Games announced that it had secured $5.3 million in funding to create a mobile version of its hit free-to-play collectible card game (CCG), Kards.
The studio said the game will be available for iOS and Android in 2022.
“We always intended for Kards to be a truly cross-platform title, and this funding enables us to bring the title to iOS and Android in 2022,” said CEO Ívar Kristjánsson. “Our investors recognize the enormous untapped potential for Kards in the mobile gaming market, which Newzoo recently projected to hit $116bn in 2024. A mobile version of Kards is our most common player request, and we’re very excited to now be able to deliver on this in the coming months.”
The financing round was attended by various VC firms, including Crowberry Capital, Korea Investment Partners, Seoul Investment Partners, Woori Technology Invest, and Sisu Game Ventures.
The brainchild of two brothers, Ívar Kristjánsson and Guðmundur Kristjansson, 1939 Games was founded in 2015. Ívar serves as the CEO of the studio.
Sang-Ho Park, Executive Director of Korea Investment Partners (KIP), commented: “Kards is a fantastically well-made game due to the pedigree of the team behind it. Our investment reflects our strong belief in the team as well as the title’s huge potential when it comes to mobile in the Asian market.”
“We are happy to follow up on our early investment as the 1939 team has proven its ability to build a stellar game. We are impressed by how they combine their artistic ability with industry insight and an innovative approach to digital card gaming. With such a great addition to the team of investors, the future is very exciting.” said Hekla Arnardottir, founding partner at Crowberry Capital and chairman of the 1939 Games board.
1939 Games said the money will be used to self-publish Kards on mobile devices and realize the studio’s vision of developing original cross-platform games. Kards is set in a WWII setting, where players build card decks and execute strategies to win. The game is currently available only on PC.
This is 1939 Games’ second fundraising event. Back in April 2020, the developer attracted $1.9 million for the development of Kards.
