Electronic Arts, a giant in the gaming industry, has acquired Metalhead Software, the Super Mega Baseball series developer.
The terms of the acquisition have not been disclosed, so it is unclear how much EA paid for this company. The deal brings the Canada-based developer Metalhead and its intellectual property under the ownership of the leading sports publisher.
In a Reddit post, Metalhead assured its gaming community that there wouldn’t be any changes to the team and it will continue developing games from its studio in Victoria, BC. However, the studio has stated that the forthcoming updates of Super Mega Baseball 3 will be minor as the developers move on to other projects.
In addition to assisting in the development of Super Mega Baseball, Metalhead will also work with other EA Sports teams to help develop new gaming and sports experiences for players worldwide. This acquisition is another step EA has taken to expand the lineup of EA Sports.
“With EA behind us, we’ll have access to additional technologies, a wealth of expertise, and a much broader audience. For us, this is also an incredible opportunity to grow our local Victoria team and tech sector with the support of EA, and let us dig into some ambitious new projects. The announcement didn’t detail what kind of new projects we can expect from the developer, only that they’ll be sports titles, as well,” the developer commented.
The publisher has been making a serious effort to increase its lineup of sports titles, including motorsports, college football, and golf. Last year, it bought Codemasters, the British developer behind chart-topping racing franchises such as F1, GRID, Dirt, and Need for Speed. EA Sports’ portfolio also comprises FIFA, Madden NFL, NHL, and UFC.
In 2021, the gaming company also acquired Glu Mobile for $2.1 billion, which is also the developer of TapSports Baseball ’20 and other games. The deal became one of the most expensive acquisitions in the gaming industry history. At the moment, EA is working on a new PGA Tour game.
