The Sweden-based Embracer Group, through its subsidiary THQ Nordic, has acquired 100% of Appeal Studios, Kaiko, and Massive Miniteam. The terms of these acquisitions were not immediately available, but THQ Nordic said it would disclose it in its earnings report later this month.
Belgium-based Appeal Studios is the developer of the original 1999 title Outcast. The second edition of the game, Outcast Second Contact, came out in 2017. The studio is currently working on an open-world sci-fi action-adventure title, which is still under wraps. Founded in 2018, Appeal Studios currently has 55 employees.
Kaiko is a Frankfurt-based developer and has worked on remastered games such as Red Faction Guerilla ReMars-tered, Darksiders Warmastered Edition, Legend of Kay Anniversary, and Darksiders II: Deathinitive Edition. The studio’s most recent projects are the Kingdoms of Amalur Re-Reckoning and its upcoming expansion pack Fatesworn. Kaiko was founded in 2014 and had ten employees.
Massive Miniteam is a German-based studio that has previously partnered with THQ Nordic’s studio and publisher, HandyGames, on several titles. HandyGames has acquired Massive Miniteam, which is the first by the company. Massive Miniteam was founded in 2018 and presently employs 20 people. Massive Miniteam has worked with HandyGames to publish its platformer Spitlings in 2020. Massive Miniteam will become a part of the HandyGames organization under THQ Nordic.
Meanwhile, THQ Nordic has founded two new subsidiaries, called THQ Nordic France SAS and animation company Gate 21 d.o.o. in Sarajevo, Bosnia, and Herzegovina.
THQ Nordic parent company Embracer Group isn’t new to acquisitions and has acquired several companies over the last few years. Last year, Embracer announced it had purchased 13 more studios for approximately $441.5 million. The acquired companies include Flying Wild Hog, Zen Studios, Silent Games, Purple Lamp Studios, Coffee Stain North, Sandbox Strategies, Nimble Giant Entertainment, Mad Head Games, among others.
