Epic Games Store’s 160M Users Spent $700M in 2020

Launched in 2018, Epic Games Store is relatively young in the PC video games scene compared to industry titans like Steam. But that didn’t make the video games developer from raking in more than 160 million users on the Epic Games Store for PC in 2020. Even better, those users have reportedly spent more than $700 million on the storefront, a significant milestone for the Fortnite game maker.

The company announced this in a post on the Epic Games’ website stating, “Thanks to this community, the Epic Games Store saw historic growth in engagement across the board. There are now over 160 million Epic Games Store PC users.”

Epic Games also confirmed that the Epic Games Store (EGS) has 31.3 million daily users, and that figure soared to a record-high 56 million monthly active users in December of last year. The number of games on EGS also grew. As of now, there are 471 games available in 2020, which is ‘Epic’ since the store only had 190 games in 2019. In addition to paid games, 103 games were offered for free, with over 749 million free games downloaded by users.

What’s interesting is the money users spent on EGS. Epic Games revealed that players spent $700 million on the store in 2020, with $435 million being spent on Fortnite alone, the crown jewel of Epic Games. The remaining $265 million was spent on third-party products.

The most popular on the Epic Games was Fortnite (not surprising), and it was followed by other well-liked titles like Borderlands 3, Rocket League, Satisfactory, and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. Another popular title was Grand Theft Auto 5, which the studio offered for free on the Epic Games Store for a limited time in 2020.

The company recently secured an early release of the 2021 Hitman 3 for PC and acquired a shopping mall for its new headquarters.

Epic commented, “To rapidly expand the catalog of new titles available on the Epic Games Store even further by providing developers with self-publishing tools.”

While the Epic Games Store for PC is growing, its mobile division is beleaguered in an ongoing legal fight between Epic Games and tech behemoths Apple and Google. The company recently expanded into the UK last week.

Epic Games said it plans to expand its catalog of new games on its storefront in 2021 by providing game developers with self-publishing tools for the Epic Games Store.
