Netmarble US studio revealed that it is merging with mobile game developer Kabam on March 1, 2022.
This means Netmarble’s North American operations will be under Kabam’s umbrella. The merger aims to reinforce Kabam’s ability to compete in the market.
Netmarble acquired Kabam, the developer of Marvel Contest of Champions, in 2017.
Under the merger, the president of Netmarble US, Simon Sim, will become the new chief operations officer at Kabam.
“I am very excited about this unification where we can bring together the expertise and resources of the two world-class mobile game sibling companies,” said Kabam CEO Seungwon Lee. “After the merger, Kabam will have the scale and enhanced capabilities to excel in game publishing and compete more effectively in today’s ever-changing market. I also believe that this merger will create synergies in the long run and expand the company’s publishing opportunities. We will continue to foster a culture of empowering passionate creators to build incredible game experiences that entertain players around the world.”
Sim will lead the operations division of the developer, as well as the studios in Acadia and Montreal. Furthermore, he will also oversee the operations of Netmarble’s Los Angeles-based studio and manage Kung Fu Factory, a subsidiary of Netmarble.
An acclaimed business leader, Sim has spent more than 25 years researching artificial intelligence and programming software.
“I am excited to be joining the Kabam team and appreciate their passion for creating games to entertain the world. I look forward to getting to know all of the teams and working closely with them to help shape an exciting future for Kabam,” said Simon Sim, Kabam COO.
Meanwhile, Seungwon Lee was named CEO of Kabam, having held various roles at Netmarble since 2007 and co-CEO.
