Scottish Games Network secures Connected Innovators grant

The funding will be used in a new research project on mapping Scotland’s games industry.

Scotland is home to a handful of major games outlets, such as Rockstar North and 4J Studios (developers of the console versions of Minecraft), and the University of Abertay, a creator of the world’s first video games degree, but there is still no clear map of the sector and its impact.

This research will offer a snapshot of the games sector across the whole country, from academia to industry. It will provide a baseline, so we can start making more informed decisions about the future of the industry in Scotland and how best to support the whole ecosystem.

Brian Baglow, Scottish Games Network founder and director

That’s why a new research project, led by the Scottish Games Network, will begin soon to research and document the number of games companies working in Scotland. The company has secured an undisclosed grant from Connected Innovators — part of a £7.6 million research and development program — to fund the research. The research will map every participant involved in designing, developing, publishing, distributing, teaching, broadcasting, or supporting the games and interactive industries, as well as the games being released.

The research’s results will be released in Q1 2021 and will be open-sourced in order to make it available to all interested parties. Now the Scottish Games Network founder and director, Brian Baglow, is calling on all full-time, part-time or hobbyist developers, tech companies, esports teams and players, Twitch streamers, YouTubers, games-related freelancers, and universities and colleges with games related courses to get in touch.
