Summer Games Done Quick 2020 raises $2.3m for Doctors Without Borders

The event was forced to be online-only, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, but the speedrunning showcase was still able to raise more than $2 million for charity.

Games Done Quick is a charity fundraising organization that raises money for charity via speedrunning. Volunteers play games at incredible speed (“Speedrunning”) for entertainment. The event is streamed live online, non-stop, and all donations go directly to the charity. Games Done Quick events feature runners playing games from every generation of gaming history. They play their games live, and explain in detail the many tricks and glitches they use to get the fastest times.

Summer Games Done Quick 2020 started on August 16 and at the end of the last stream, the total amount raised sits at $2,309,530. This includes direct donations, Games Done Quick Twitch channel subscriptions, Twitch Bits, and purchases from SGDQ partners, like The Yetee and Fangamer. The broadcast of the event on Twitch reached 107,500 concurrent viewers at its peak. One of the highlights of SGDQ 2020 is its first-ever speedrun of a VR game, with Buffet Time completing Half-Life: Alyx at 31 minutes and 16.6 seconds. The speedrunner utilized various glitches and exploits to finish the game, and got an intense workout in the process.

Since 2010, the Games Done Quick organization – which includes flagship events Awesome Games Done Quick in January and Summer Games Done Quick in summer — has raised over $27 million for charities including Doctors Without Borders, Prevent Cancer Foundation, Direct Relief, AbleGamers, and Organization for Autism Research.
