The pandemic has been a boon for video game developers and publishers alike. People are increasingly forced to stay home and spend more time on video games and other forms of digital entertainment. According to reports, yet-to-be-released video game projects raised $23 million on Kickstarter in 2020. This is the highest total ever recorded since 2015 and a 35% increase year-on-year.
It is worth mentioning that the number of crowdfunding campaigns for video games was lower compared to 2019. There was a total of 1,331 projects last year as opposed to 1,403 in 2019. However, out of those 1,331 projects, 408 meet their goals, which is the highest since 2014, according to the 2020 report by ICO Partners, a video games publisher.
Many of the projects had a projected target of raising under $50,000, while only six games raised over $500,000, namely Kindred Fates, Sea of Stars, and My Time at Sandrock. Leading the pack was Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, which raised over $3 million, making it the most successful video games campaign of 2020. Securing the second spot was The Wonderful 101: Remastered and Pathfinder, and Wrath of the Righteous, which both amassed north of $2 million.
Meanwhile, Tabletop Gaming had run an incredible crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter last year. The UK gaming magazine has raised a total of $237 million, which accounted for a third of all the cash raised on the platform in 2020. A total of 3,163 tabletop games projects were funded, a record, while 1,319 games failed to get any money whatsoever.
Stepping outside video games, Kickstarter had a fantastic 2020 with a record $730 million in crowdfunding campaigns across 37,581 campaigns compared to $615 million in 2019. What’s interesting is that the New York-based crowdfunding platform attained that record with lesser projects than in 2019, which was set across 41,789 projects. Among all the campaigns, 18,642 projects were successfully funded, ranging from video games, tabletop gaming, design, and technology.
